Local funeral homes merge
Apr 16, 2018Paul T. Lochstampfor recently merged his funeral home with Nickel Funeral Home in Loysville.The Waynesboro location will keep its name. The Loysville location has become Nickel-Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home & Cremation Center.Lochstampfor will continue to oversee operations in Waynesboro, and James "Jimmy" Nickel will run the Loysville location.If the Nickel name rings a bell, it's because the Nickel family has a history in Waynesboro. A brief history In 1925, Ernest Nickel purchased the building now known as Lochstampfor Funeral Home on South Church Street in Waynesboro.From there, he started the Nickel Funeral Home and opened the doors for business on June 15, 1925. Nickel operated the business until 1946 when one of his sons died and he sold the business and moved to Loysville and started the Nickel Funeral Home there.The funeral home in Waynesboro changed hands multiple times before Lochstampfor purchased the funeral home on May 8, 1992.Meanwhile in Loysville, Nickel’s son, Jimmy, has been overseeing the Nickel Funeral Home. The merger When the opportunity was put on the table by Nickel to merge the funeral homes, Lochstampfor knew it was a move that would benefit everyone involved.“Last year we had a 36 percent increase in business,” said Lochstampfor. “And the funeral home in Loysville had a 40 percent increase.”“It was just becoming all too much for Jimmy—he was tired. I’ve really done most of the dressing, casketing and cosmetology for him over the last seven years,” said Lochstampfor.As of January 2017, when the state of Pennsylvania made it mandatory to issue electronic death certificates, Nickel decided to take a step back and the two funeral directors started having serious discussions about the merger."When people found out I was doing this, they would say, 'What’s happening, are you leaving Waynesboro?'” Lochstampfor said. “I would say ‘no', this is just the way that funeral homes are expanding now a days.’“We’ve worked together for years, so this was j...
